How Texas Calculates Child Support
Texas courts start with a percentage of the paying parent’s monthly net resources: wages, self-employment income, bonuses, commissions, rental income, and most other income, minus Social Security taxes, federal income tax, union dues, and the cost of the child’s health and dental insurance (Tex. Fam. Code § 154.062).

These percentages apply to net resources up to $11,700 per month, the cap in effect since September 1, 2025 (§ 154.125). Above the cap, a court may add support based on the child’s proven needs. Lower percentages apply when the paying parent’s net resources are under $1,000 a month or when that parent supports children in another household, and a judge may set a different amount when the guideline figure would be unjust or inappropriate (§ 154.123). Health Insurance, Medical & Dental Support
- Every support order must provide for the child’s health insurance and dental coverage (§ 154.181).
- When reasonably priced coverage isn’t available, the court can order cash medical support of up to 9% of the paying parent’s annual gross resources (§ 154.182).
- Health care costs that insurance doesn’t pay are divided between the parents.
- Medical and dental support are added on top of guideline child support (§ 154.183).

Child Support FAQs
How long does child support last in Texas?
Usually until the child turns 18 or graduates from high school, whichever is later, as long as the child stays enrolled and meets attendance requirements. Support for a child with a disability can continue indefinitely when the disability began before 18 and the child can’t support themselves (§ 154.302).
Can child support be changed later?
Yes. A court can modify support after a material and substantial change in circumstances, or when it has been at least three years since the order and the guideline amount would differ by 20% or $100 a month (§ 156.401). Our modification attorneys can tell you whether you qualify.
What if the other parent stops paying?
Texas courts can confirm the unpaid amount as a judgment with interest, order wage withholding, place liens, and suspend licenses. Our enforcement lawyers can explain which tools fit your case.
Can I keep the children from a parent who is behind on support?
No. Child support and parenting time are separate obligations in Texas. Withholding court-ordered time can lead to an enforcement action against you, and a court can’t make support depend on visitation (§ 154.011).
Where are child support payments made?
Texas orders generally direct payments through the Texas State Disbursement Unit, which keeps an official record of each payment. That record matters if you ever need to prove what was paid or missed.
